What the day is like

A long drive each way — around two and a half hours in each direction — and a full afternoon in the old town.

Sibiu is the best-preserved Saxon town in the country, and it is a long way from Brașov. We say that first because it shapes the day: about two and a half hours on the road each way, and an early start.

Why it is still worth it

The upper and lower towns are joined by staircases and a bridge, and the whole thing is intact in a way Brașov is not. The Brukenthal collection is genuinely good. If you have a spare day and do not mind the drive, take it.

If you would rather not drive

Say so — the Saxon villages give you much of the same texture with a third of the road time.

Is the drive really that long?

Yes — about two and a half hours each way. It is the single biggest thing to weigh up about this day, which is why we put it at the top of the page rather than in the small print.

Could we stay overnight in Sibiu instead?

You could, but not with us — everything we run returns the same day. We are happy to tell you which trains are sensible if you want to do it independently.
