Up through the gorge and onto the ridge shoulder. A proper mountain day with a head for exposure needed near the top.
Up through the Zărnești gorge and onto the shoulder of the Piatra Craiului ridge. The gorge is easy walking between limestone walls; the climb out of it is not, and the last section has enough exposure that you want a head for it.
The ground
Seven hundred and fifty metres of ascent over fourteen kilometres. The gorge takes an hour, the climb about two and a half, and the descent is on the same line. Loose rock in places.
Weather
We cancel this day for storms without argument. The ridge is the wrong place to be in lightning, and the forecast in these mountains changes fast.

07:00Pickup in Brașov
Forty-five minutes to Zărnești and the start of the track.
08:00Into the gorge
An hour of flat walking between limestone walls two hundred metres high. Cool even in August.
09:15The climb begins
Out of the gorge and up through beech forest. Steady, relentless, about two hours to the treeline.
11:30The shoulder
Out onto open ground with the ridge above. This is where the exposure starts and where we decide how far to go.
12:30Lunch with the view
Bring your own. The whole Bârsa depression is below you.
13:30Descent
Back the way we came. Slower than it sounds — loose rock and tired legs.
16:30Back in Brașov
Late afternoon, roughly.

How exposed is it really?
The gorge and the forest climb are not exposed at all. The last forty minutes onto the shoulder has drops beside the path. If that is not for you, say so and the guide will turn round at the treeline — it is still a good day.
Will we see bears?
Possibly, and not as a feature. This is bear country and your guide will brief you properly. It is a hiking day, not a wildlife day.
What if the weather turns?
We cancel and you pick another date or take a full refund. If it turns while we are out, the guide decides to descend and that decision is not up for discussion.
